A Perfect Run

Two years ago I ran in my first race. The Redondo Beach Superbowl 10K. It was raining and windy, but I was committed to running so I went out and did it. It was then that I realized how fun a race could be and how fun it could be to run in the rain! Yesterday, two years later, I skipped the 10K and went for a nice 18 mile run. It wasn't raining hard, but enough of a sprinkle to keep me cool. I ran it in my best time ever and today I'm barely feeling sore! I was wishing that it was marathon day yesterday, because I was feeling like I could've kept going.

I've been thinking about how I just sort of jumped into this long distance running, out of the blue, and wondering what it is that I like about it. It's true that I like the sense of accomplishment, but more than that I like being outside and being on my own (or with Raven) for a little while. I know what my Saturday mornings are going to be like and I look forward to that time. My sister-in-law, Tina, was asking me what type of program I am following and if I am keeping track of my heart rate and all that. I tried that for the first marathon and found that I didn't think it was helping, so I stopped all the reading of books and searching for the best way to run. For me, I just needed to do what felt right. If my heart started beating too hard, I slowed down. If my knees started hurting, I ran less. This time around I am feeling pretty good. I don't want to jinx myself, but I think this L.A. marathon is going to be a lot of fun!

Here are a few shots from a 10 mile run that Raven and I went on a few weeks back. It's been different training this time of year rather than the summer. More rain and cold weather and I'm finding that it's easier to run in this weather.

Our normally dry creek bed in the background.
If you look really close, you might see a rainbow.

Awesome,Tasha. I really admire your love for running and running a marathon. Being around Dennis and Bobby and the marathons that they ran I always thought it looked like so much fun even though I knew that training to run a marathon is no easy task. My goal was to run a marathon at age 50. However I am just not a long distance runner. Love my power walks but the long runs just wasn't a good fit for me. So 50 came and went without a marathon under my belt. Sooooo.........now after my weight loss goal of last year is complete I now have my next goal which of course is to climb Whitney this summer. While I really, really wanted to run a marathon I think that I realized that I needed to stay in my zone. I remember when Dennis's brother, Johnny ran in his one and only marathon. It was the Avenue of the Giants. He left his car at Sandy's and planned on surfing his way down the coast to Santa Barbara where he was living at the time after the marathon. Needless to say he never took the board off his car. He could barely walk, none the less surf. AND that was his one and only marathon. So it's not for all, that's for sure. However my hat is off to you. Your training schedule and long runs are amazing. The L.A. should be a good one. Love you, Susan

Wow, 18 miles and you make it sound like it was a breeze. I am so impressed by your commitment. How great that you are having so much fun doing this. It amazes me that you can do this, be a mom and work, too. My hat is off to you. I know that you will do great in the marathon.
Much love,
Denise

18 miles, Tasha! Way to go! You are doing so well!!!! From my limited running experience, I know how much better it is to run in the cooler weather as opposed to the hot weather. And how important it is to listen to your body.
Keep up the good work.
Love you, Sandy

Tasha,
18 miles! You're amazing! Right now I can't even imagine it. I've only been running 4 miles at a time and my hip is killing me to the point I can't run now! I've taken a week off and it's still not any better. I may go the doctors this week. I really have wanted to do this whole marathon thing and this is my second attempt but I'm feeling like my body keeps saying "stick to climbing mountains!" I'm feeling bummed because I think I have the endurance but my hips and knees are screaming at me! Time will tell. Keep up the good work girl!!

Miss you, Tina

Each of us has someway to challenge ourselves and feel good about what we've accomplished. I'm glad you enjoy the runs, because I'd hate to think of you running all that way and hating every step of it! I saw Tina and Rochelle on Saturday and they were both hurting from their 4 mile run. They might need to find some other challenge that doesn't punish their bodies so much and let you do the running!

And speaking of challenges, Lauren sang in the Citrus Fair talent show on Saturday and won 1st in her division and won a trophy and $100 for 1st place overall individual talent! We we sooo proud. It felt like watching you all over again and feeling that warm feeling hearing you sing! Enough for now.....
Love, Mom

Tasha, I'm so glad that you have found a passion with running! It is such a healthy thing to do...gets you outside in our beautiful world, burns calories and gives you alone time to just think or be....which every mother needs sometimes! We love to cheer you on when you race. Hugs to you!
